In the coming weeks, you might receive a “2019 Census Test” from the U.S. Census Bureau in the mail. This is a legitimate census test from the U.S. Census Bureau, which is being sent to nearly 500,000 random homes across the country between now and Aug. 15. Some recipients will be asked to return the questionnaire by mail, others through the internet. If you receive this test, you should complete it.One version of this test will include a question asking if the recipient is a citizen of the United States. Another version of the test will not include this question. The Federal Government has proposed including a citizenship question on the official 2020 Census. The United States Supreme Court has blocked the addition and sent the issue back to a lower court. This 2019 Census Test does not replace the official 2020 U.S. Census. Even if you receive and reply to the test, it is critical that you complete the official 2020 Census when you receive it next year. For more information about Census 2020, visit census.lacounty.gov.
